In the last decade or so, eyelashes have gotten much more attention than ever before from the beauty industry. Everyone is looking for ways to lengthen, volumize, and beautify these little hairs. As a New York Times columnist noted, “It’s hard to deny the heart-melting effect of a pair of long lashes delicately lowered and raised, as everyone from Disney animators to [novelist] Vladimir Nabokov could tell you… Long lashes are innocent and seductive at once.” Eyelashes are an essential feature on your face, but only recently have cosmetologists begun considering more sophisticated ways to magnify them. Since this industry is still in its relative infancy, new techniques for fuller, shapelier lashes continue to pop up.

At Sassy Lashes, our lash artists use their years of experience and comprehensive training to enhance clients’ looks with eyelash extensions. We’ve chosen this method due to the many advantages it affords. Of course, there are other ways to try and boost your lashes. Unfortunately, many of these come with unexpected downsides, upsetting risks, and poor results. That’s why we’ve made it our mission to not just serve our clients, but educate them in this field, so they know what works and what doesn’t.

One of the latest trends in eyelashes is lash serum. In the following blog, we’ll explain what this product is, how it compares to eyelash extensions, and why you should choose Sassy Lashes to adorn your eyes with gorgeous lashes.

Lash Serum Simplified

You may have seen lash serum advertised without fully understanding what this product actually is. Essentially, lash serums are liquids or gels that supposedly make your lashes grow longer, thicker, and more beautiful when you paint them on. They aren’t makeup like mascara; the idea is that their ingredients stimulate your body to grow your natural lashes to be more glamorous, so you can get the luxe lash look without applying other cosmetics. As the consumer advocacy group, CHOICE, explains, “over the last few years there has been a steady climb in products that claim to enhance and help boost the growth of your natural lashes. They’re usually topically applied, and most claim that with daily use your lashes will grow longer in just a few weeks.” Given the results they promise, many lash lovers have bought or at least considered using a serum.

Eyelash Extensions 101

In order to compare lash serum with eyelash extensions, you need to know a bit about both. Now that we’ve introduced you to the basic concept of lash serum, we need to explain the alternative. Of course, since both Sassy Lashes salons focus entirely on this rapidly expanding field, we are more than capable of describing the details of eyelash extensions.

The New York Times recently covered the topic of eyelash extensions. After calling them a “cosmetic cheat code,” reporter Molly Fitzpatrick went over the process for eyelash extensions, which are individual false eyelashes: “they are professionally applied, one on each natural lash, with a semi-permanent glue meant to hold them in place…Extensions bewitch your lashes with the length and volume nature didn’t see fit to give you.” She also makes pains to point out: “Ophthalmologists [eye doctors] are fine with [this treatment],” which is generally considered quite safe when properly administered. Eyelash extensions come in a variety of lengths, shapes, and sizes. At Sassy Lashes, we offer an array of styles, plus we customize each individual lash used to your needs and preferences.

Pros and Cons of Lash Serums

Lash serums seem like a dream, a miracle treatment. Who wouldn’t want to take two seconds to put on a gel and have their natural lashes grow in the way you’ve always wanted? Here’s the catch, though – as Self magazine puts it, “eyelash serums are one of those beauty products that seem too good to be true.” The article goes on to explain: “unfortunately, most of the eyelash serums you find in the store won’t do anything” and cites “dermatologist Pamela A. Lowe,” who argues “‘There is no compelling evidence that biotin [the main ingredient in most lash serums] will increase lash growth.” As appealing as lash serum sounds, in reality, it simply isn’t effective.

The only thing worse than a lash serum that doesn’t work, however, might be a lash serum that does. Self magazine heralds Latisse as the only product that has been “proven to…affect the growth cycle of the hair.” However, since Latisse “contains a regulated drug [bimatoprost, originally developed to treat glaucoma], the only way you can get your hands on it with a doctor’s prescription.” Latisse is serious business. If you’re able to get a prescription, “you need to apply it faithfully every night before bed, and be sure to do so right at the lash line,” otherwise it won’t work. Even when you do everything right, “it can take months to notice any results.” So, at best, lash serum is a hassle that takes a long time to work.

In addition, Latisse often comes with a host of unpleasant side effects. Self magazine points out: “one of the side effects of bimatoprost is discoloration on the eyelids and the iris.” This medication can famously turn blue, hazel, or green eyes brown and give your eyelids a darker hue, which isn’t exactly aesthetic. Negative side effects aren’t limited to Latisse – Truth in Aging discusses how the lash serum Lilash (whose active ingredient is prostaglandin, a type of hormone) can cause “hair sprouting up between the cheekbone and lower lashes” and “red, swollen, and itchy eyes,” among other alarming symptoms.

In sum, lash serums are typically ineffective, tedious to apply, and potentially dangerous. As Self magazine suspected, these products are, in fact, too good to be true.

How Eyelash Extensions Compare

Eyelash extensions offer numerous advantages over lash serums. Some of these benefits include:

  • Faster results. Even with the best possible lash serums, you’d need to carefully put on eyelash serum everyday for weeks or (more likely) months to see any change. With eyelash extensions, you’ll have the lashes you want in just a couple hours.
  • Minimal side effects. Especially with careful treatment from our highly trained lash artists, eyelash extensions have much fewer risks than lash serums.

These are just a few of the reasons Sassy Lashes recommends eyelash extensions over lash serum.
